Bart A. Hillock, Director of Tennis  


Bart grew up in Goleta, California and was a two-time Doubles All-American at Cal State Bakersfield. During his four college years, Bart played #2 & 3 singles and #1 doubles on a team that finished #2 NCAA Div 2 team in the nation in 1982. In 1983 Bart and his doubles partner won the independent doubles title at the Ojai Tennis Tournament, and he was runner-up in the NCAA Div II National Champions. After College he was hired as the Assistant Pro at Cathedral Oaks Tennis Club, and he was promoted to Interim Tennis Director for one year.  Then in 1987 he was hired as Director at The Santa Barbara Polo and Racquet Club. Bart ran all the tennis activities and taught tennis to adults and kids of all levels from beginners to National Champions. After his 17 year stint at the SBPRC he took a sabbatical to pursue his dreams of traveling and fixing up and flipping homes. Bart has been back for over three years and is very happy to be back home with his friends and what he likes to call his extended family, the SBPRC Members.
Bart works with players throughout the years and has had many successful proteges:

Junior National Champions: Lori Kimbell-1985, 14’s national champion and Derrick Pope-1993, 18’s clay court national champion



 

Lance Kronberg, Head Tennis Professional

A native of Santa Barbara, Lance has played on state championship teams at Santa Barbara High and Santa Barbara City College and earned All-American honors twice as a collegiate player. After college, he became head coach of Men’s Tennis at Santa Barbara City College and awarded Coach of the Year honors in 2001. Lance is returning to SBCC this year to coach the Men’s Tennis team. Over 15 years on staff here at SBP&RC, Lance has been a great ambassador to the game, helping create a fun and exciting tennis environment for players of all ages and abilities, as well as making it an important place to develop and improve one's game. Lance is a NASM Certified Personal Trainer, and is currently being mentored by Dr. Marcus Elliott, MD Harvard and founder of P3 Peak Performance Project (www.P3.md). Dr. Elliott is a world leader in the field of sports science (and an avid tennis player), and has been helping Lance with his understanding of high performance training and injury prevention.



 

Stephanie Baker-Stone, Certified USTPA

Stephanie is a certified USPTA Tennis Coach. She has been with the club for 11 years and prior to being here, she was the Director of Tennis at the historic Miramar Hotel in Santa Barbara. Originally from Virginia, Stephanie played division 1 college tennis at James Madison University where she won her singles conference her senior year. She has been teaching tennis for over 25 years and her experience includes teaching at clubs in Virginia, Arizona and California as well as in Namibia and South Africa. She also has experience as a travelling coach for the Junior Fed Cup team, high school coach and USTA schools programs coach. Stephanie still enjoys competing and continues to play at the national level. She represented Southern California in an Intersectional team competition in Austin, TX this year. At the National Hard Courts in La Jolla she finished 5th and 6th in singles the last 2 years and won the bronze in doubles this year. Stephanie is by far the top female pro in our Tri-Counties. Her broad knowledge and enthusiasm promises to make your learning experience an enjoyable one. 


 Elliot Markowitz, Junior Player Development Coach


Elliot started working for the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club in the summer of 2009. He assisted in the kid’s summer camp’s learning the fundamentals of coaching tennis. Elliot worked with Lance Kronberg as a junior and excelled playing 4 years of varsity tennis at Santa Barbara High School and two years at Santa Barbara City College. He has worked the summer camps from 2009-2012 and started working the front desk in 2010 while he was attending UCSB. He also can be seen helping in “Club Mixers” and just hanging around the Club, it has become his second home. Elliot is now the head of the Junior Player Development Program at SBPRC and is also available for hitting sessions and lessons. He teaches in the Tuesday and Thursday junior clinics and is working with many of the juniors from the club.
